Karakterisasi Sifat Fisis, Morfologi, dan Komposisi Permukaan Arang Tempurung Lontar (Borassus flabellifer L.) Hasil Karbonisasi dan Aktivasi Kimia

Tempurung lontar (Borassus flabellifer L.) merupakan biomassa lokal yang berpotensi dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan baku arang untuk aplikasi adsorben. Karakteristik arang dipengaruhi oleh proses karbonisasi dan aktivasi, sehingga diperlukan kajian terhadap perubahan sifat fisis, morfologi, dan komposisi permukaannya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan membandingkan sifat fisis, morfologi permukaan, dan komposisi unsur arang tempurung lontar sebelum dan sesudah aktivasi kimia menggunakan KOH. Tempurung lontar dikarbonisasi pada suhu 400 °C selama 120 menit menggunakan kiln drum modifikasi, kemudian arang diaktivasi menggunakan KOH 0,1 M selama 24 jam. Karakteristik fisis ditentukan berdasarkan rendemen, kadar air, dan kadar abu, sedangkan morfologi permukaan dan komposisi unsur dianalisis menggunakan Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) dan Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses karbonisasi menghasilkan rendemen sebesar 66,00%. Setelah aktivasi, kadar air menurun dari 5,61% menjadi 3,75% dan kadar abu dari 6,43% menjadi 2,59%. Citra SEM menunjukkan bahwa permukaan arang setelah aktivasi menjadi lebih terbuka dan berongga dibandingkan sebelum aktivasi. Analisis EDX menunjukkan penurunan kandungan Ca dari 15,48 wt% menjadi 3,30 wt% dan Mg dari 6,84 wt% menjadi 1,40 wt%, sedangkan kandungan O meningkat dari 48,26 wt% menjadi 59,34 wt% dan unsur K sebesar 5,56 wt% terdeteksi setelah aktivasi. Hasil karakterisasi menunjukkan bahwa aktivasi KOH mengubah sifat fisis, morfologi permukaan, dan komposisi unsur arang tempurung lontar, serta menghasilkan karakteristik permukaan yang berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai adsorben berbasis biomassa lokal.
